Witnessing the Sunrise Lift-off at Freezout Lake

March 27, 2021 - Freezout Lake Snow Goose and Tundra Swan Migration

For those of us in Central Montana, a sure sign of spring is the return of the snow geese and tundra swans — along with a plethora of waterfowl — to Freezeout Lake outside of Fairfield on their journey north. Beginning in early to mid-March, “geese counts” are part of daily conversation, and it’s never a wasted morning to arise early to make it to the area by sunrise to watch the liftoff. While numbers vary day to day, with roughly 300,000 snow geese and 10,000 tundra swans passing through the area every spring, then again in the fall on their return trip, it’s spectacular to see such large groups.
