Spring is here – let the gardening begin!

Spring came in like a lamb, and seems to follow the same path into April. This is just fine with me! I’m working on an article about season extending techniques so I set up a couple of Wall-O-Waters in the garden to warm up the soil before planting peas. The tomatoes won’t go out until at least the middle of April (only because the plants won’t be large enough), but I’m anxious to get something growing outside.

I’m also writing a column on gardening trends. In 2009 there were more than 7 million new gardeners working the soil in the U.S., and the numbers continue to increase. People seem to want to get their hands dirty partly because of the economy, and partly because they’re becoming more aware of food choices. Whatever the motivation, it is undoubtedly a positive lifestyle change.
