Planning the garden

Normally I don’t start seeding until around March 6, give or take a couple of days. This year, I need to start earlier because some crops take longer, plus I’m going to push the season earlier. So I’m going to seed celery, a few peppers and tomatoes this week. According to the Farmers’ Almanac the best days will be Feb. 24-25. Even though I don’t always hold hard and fast to planting by the moon, my father was convinced making me wonder if there’s something to it. I’ll try to stick with the program as much as possible. It can’t hurt!
Along the gardening lines, I am writing an article to help gardeners plan how much they should plant. This is a puzzlement to many new gardeners who can easily find themselves with way too many zucchini and not enough carrots. It’s a terrible temptation to plant too much – I’m as guilty as anyone – but with a little forethought gardeners can strike that balance between having plenty and being overwhelmed.

i will look forward to your insight into how much to plant! lord knows we had way too much squash and zucchini last year! due to our move, we probably won’t have our garden in until a little later in the season so i’ll probably need pick your brain about what we should be focusing on due to the timing.

Hey Amy!
Great to hear from you! I love your blog. Sounds like you guys are settling in well. Even late planting works well, so just drop me a note when the time comes and I’ll let you know what you can count on harvesting. Keep in mind, there’s also a whole other growing season into fall. Broccoli , cabbage, cauliflower do especially well that time of year! And I’m picking spinach that came up in one of the beds in the community garden. Very yummy.
